For over two decades, actor Hugh Jackman has been the most definitive incarnation of Wolverine, the mutant superhero with extraordinary healing powers and razor-sharp adamantium claws. Jackman first played the character in 2000’s X-Men, and his portrayal has been hailed by many as the crowning achievement of the oft-adapted comics character. He went on to reprise the role six more times, in X-Men 2, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and the final solo outing, Logan.
Jackman first spoke about playing Wolverine after reading the script for X-Men. He was attracted to the moral complexity and struggle of the character, and he sought to bring out Wolverine’s humanity in life and on screen. During his time playing the part, Jackman gained worldwide fame, earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor and several People’s Choice nominations in the process.
Jackman’s legacy with the character has been so successful and enduring that the X-Men franchise was placed on hold after the release of Logan. There have been no plans revealed to recast the role as of yet, though if franchise producers do decide to do so, whoever is chosen to take on the mantle of Wolverine will have some pretty big shoes to fill.
