The record for the most points scored in an NBA game is held by Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia Warriors. On March 2, 1962, Chamberlain scored 100 points against the New York Knicks in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
This record has stood for over fifty years and is a testament to his skill as a basketball player. Playing for an incredible 20 years, during his career Chamberlain scored a total of over 30,000 points, a mark that puts him at number two in the all-time scoring list.
The 100 point mark that Chamberlain achieved during his career is often seen as one of the greatest feats in professional basketball. It is estimated that fewer than 20,000 people on the day were present to witness the feat and a total of 2 points were scored in the last two minutes of the game.
The game came at such a time when Chamberlain was already considered one of the best players in the league. His 67 points per game average that season is still one of the highest for a single season. He was also the first NBA player to average more than 50 points in a single season.
Although Chamberlain has held onto his record for more than fifty years, other NBA greats have chased after the feat. Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers scored 81 points in a game against the Toronto Raptors in 2006, and Michael Jordan, who Chamberlain once said was his successor, scored 69 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1990.
Chamberlain’s 100-point feat is seen as one of the greatest moments in the history of professional basketball, and one that will certainly remain in the books for years to come.
