The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for Covid-19 have been available since last December for those over the age of 16 in the US. This began the monumental task of opening up the vaccine to the public; and while the vast majority of people should get the vaccine, there are some individuals who should not.
The two main categories of people who should not get the Covid-19 vaccine are those with a history of severe allergic reactions and those who are immunocompromised. For the first group, this includes those who have had a severe allergic reaction to any ingredient in the vaccine or to a previous dose. For the second group, this means anyone with a major health condition like HIV/AIDS that impacts their immune system or anyone undergoing treatments or taking medications that weaken their immune system or cause other health complications.
In some cases, it may be advisable to wait until more research is available before getting the vaccine. For example, pregnant women and those under the age of 16 have not been studied as extensively and so it may be best to wait in these cases.
Finally, it is important to note that everyone should always consult with their healthcare provider before getting the vaccine. There may be conditions that your provider is aware of that puts you into a category of those who should not get the vaccine, such as having had a blood condition like thrombocytopenia.
Ultimately, getting the Covid-19 vaccine is the best way to protect yourself from the virus, but if you are in one of these categories, it is important to heed the guidance of your healthcare provider and wait to get vaccinated.
