The Eagles’ song "Hotel California" was released in 1976 and is widely considered to be one of the band’s greatest and most iconic songs. The song was written by Don Felder, Glenn Frey, and Don Henley and was released as the first single from their album of the same name. Lead vocalist Don Henley is thought to have been the primary force behind the lyrics, which explore themes of loss, hedonism, material excess, and the dark side of the American Dream.
Musically, the song primarily features Henley’s lead vocal with guitars by Don Felder and Joe Walsh. Other instruments on the track include bass, keyboards, saxophone, and congas as well as background vocals from Glenn Frey, Don Felder, and Randy Meisner. Although other Eagles members contributed to the recording and performance of the song, Henley is credited as the primary lead vocalist and songwriter.
Since its release, the song has become one of the most iconic and widely covered songs by the Eagles and of the 1970s. It has been featured in various films and TV shows, sampling and remakes, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. Hotel California has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and is one of the best-selling singles in music history.
