Bitcoin is the world’s first decentralized digital currency, and it has changed the way people think about currency. It was created in 2009 by an anonymous individual or group, under the name Satoshi Nakamoto. The identity of the creator of Bitcoin remains unknown, although speculations and theories abound.
Given the enormous potential of the technology, many analysts and enthusiasts took the idea of Bitcoin and ran with it, giving rise to the cryptocurrency market we see today. Nakamoto’s Bitcoin whitepaper, published in 2008 and titled "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System," laid out the basis for a new kind of money—a currency which could be sent across the world without any bank or third party oversight.
The software was released open source in 2009, with support for users around the world. As of late 2020, Bitcoin was trading around US$30000 per coin, up hundreds of times from its original price of pennies.
Nakamoto’s identity still remains a mystery, and until the creator steps forward, no one may ever really know who started Bitcoin. But we can safely say that they are responsible for taking a daring idea—an independent currency regulated by the users themselves—and turning it into reality.
