The sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912, has gone down as one of the greatest tragedies of the 20th century. Since its demise, the Titanic has become synonymous with a human tragedy of huge proportions, due to its loss of life. But, who survived the Titanic?
On the fateful night, there were 2,228 passengers and crew on board. This included passengers of all social classes, from the richest passengers from England and America in first class, to the many poor passengers from Eastern Europe in third class. However, only 706 passengers and crew survived the Titanic disaster. Most of those who lived through the tragedy were third-class passengers or crew members.
So, who were those who survived the Titanic? Among those who lived through it were some of the most famous people of that time. Of the first-class passengers, notable survivors include: Molly Brown, J Bruce Ismay (chairman of the White Star Line), Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon and his wife, and Margaret Bechstein (daughter of the banking family).
Third-class passenger, Margaret Rice was the first Irish survivor of the Titanic. She escaped on collapsible A, alongside her five sons and husband. There was also a six month old girl, Eva Hart whose mother was one of the victims of the Titanic disaster. However, Eva and her father managed to survive.
The instances of survival were, by and large, extremely fortunate. Many people owe their lives to good luck and brave crew members who followed the Titanic’s policy, which specified that women and children should be saved first.
Ultimately, the sinking of the Titanic went down as one of the greatest human tragedies of modern history. Although it’s not possible to know all the names of those who survived the Titanic, we do know that it was due to extreme luck and the bravery of a few, that some people managed to live through the devastating sinking.
