Donkey, the iconic shape-shifting sidekick from the beloved Shrek movie series, is voiced by American actor, comedian and musician Eddie Murphy.
The character of Donkey was originally written for the first Shrek movie in 2001 as “a loud-mouthed, overbearing sidekick who was always trying to make things easier for Shrek and get himself ahead in the process.” Originally, the writers had wanted to go with a standup comedian to voice the role, particularly naming Billy Crystal as someone they were looking at. Ultimately, they decided to go with Murphy.
With an enormous comic career under his belt at that point, Murphy had had experience with both live-action and animation, which made him a great option for the role. He is said to have “fully embodied” the character of Donkey, “[capturing] the stubbornness and the uncanny ability to get himself in and out of trouble with his quick wit.”
Murphy went on to voice Donkey in all the Shrek films, and has even done two spin-off movies, Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After. He also continues to lend his voice to the series in subsequent projects and appearances, including two “Puss in Boots” movies and the test footage for the upcoming fourth feature-length installment in the series.
