Lightning McQueen started as the main character from the Pixar movie "Cars" released in 2006. Throughout the movie, and the three sequels that followed, McQueen was voiced by the iconic actor and comedian Owen Wilson.
Wilson was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1968, and he began his career in the late 1990s. He quickly became a major Hollywood star, appearing in many classic comedy movies like "Wedding Crashers," "Night at the Museum," and "Zoolander." He was perfect for the role of Lightning McQueen because of his natural comedic timing and roguish charm.
McQueen’s personality in the movie was always fun and exciting, but also muddled with uncertainty and the pressure of being a top racer. Through the three sequels, we saw the character evolve, learning from his mistakes and using his charm to succeed. Wilson provided McQueen’s voice with a perfect balance of cocky bravado and tender vulnerability that touched audiences of all ages.
No matter how much the character of McQueen changed through the years, one constant remained: Owen Wilson. This choice to keep Wilson has allowed audiences to form an emotional connection with the character that wouldn’t be possible otherwise.
Lightning McQueen wouldn’t be the near-iconic character that he is today without the work of Owen Wilson. His perfect brand of comedy and strong but humble characterization continues to bring fans of the "Cars" franchise back for each movie.
