Nelson Mandela was one of the most prominent figures in the history of South Africa. Born in Umtata, South Africa in 1918, Nelson Mandela was an anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He spent 27 years in prison after being convicted of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government.
Mandela was a leading member of the African National Congress (ANC), the majority-rule party that had been in the forefront of the fight against the unjust system of racial oppression in South Africa. As an activist, co-founder of the militant Umkhonto we Sizwe (“Spear of the Nation”), and prominent member of the ANC, Mandela was recognized in 1993 as a Nobel Peace Prize winner for his efforts to peacefully achieve the overthrow of apartheid through negotiations.
During his presidency, Mandela implemented policies to improve the lives of South Africa’s poor, helping to make it one of the most peaceful and economically successful countries in Africa. He also championed LGBT rights and enabled South Africa to embrace a multiracial identity. He was succeeded by Thabo Mbeki in 1999.
In 2013, Mandela died at the age of 95 after suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection. He is remembered to this day as a beacon of freedom and justice who changed the course of the nation’s history.
