In 2006, George W. Bush was serving as the 43rd President of the United States. Bush, a Republican from Texas, had served as President since 2001, and was re-elected in 2004.
Bush had won the 2004 presidential election, defeating then-Senator John Kerry. During his presidency, Bush pursued a range of domestic and foreign policies. Domestically, he pushed for tax cuts, reforms to the education system, and a new energy policy. His foreign policy included the war in Afghanistan, launched after the September 11 attacks, as well as military action in Iraq.
On the home front, Bush presided over an economy that was in a period of expansion. During the first half of his term, the economy was growing at a rate of 5.4% per year from 2003 to 2006. Unemployment was decreasing and wages were increasing. But the housing market began to weaken in 2006, leading to the financial crisis of 2007 to 2008.
During Bush’s presidency, the US was involved in several wars and military engagements. In 2006, operations in Iraq and Afghanistan were in full swing. Bush also signed an agreement with North Korea to end its nuclear weapons program.
In 2006, George W. Bush had a 37% approval rating, according to Gallup polls. A majority of Americans had grown tired of the war in Iraq, and his approval ratings were the lowest of any two-term president since polling began.
Bush’s presidency ended in 2009 as Barack Obama succeeded him in office. Obama had campaigned against Bush’s foreign policy, promising to bring an end to the war in Iraq.
