In 2008 the 44th President of the United States was Barack Obama.
Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4th, 1961, to a Kenyan father and American mother. He attended Columbia University in New York and Harvard Law School, where he became the first African-American President of the Harvard Law Review. After graduating, he returned to Chicago to work as a community organizer and civil rights attorney.
From 1992 to 2004, Obama served as a state senator in Illinois, leading legislative efforts on health care reform and expanding economic opportunity. In 2005, he was elected to represent Illinois in the United States Senate.
In 2008, Obama ran for President of the United States against Senator John McCain. He won the election with 365 Electoral College votes, the highest total since 1996.
As President, Obama worked to strengthen the economy by rescuing banks, auto companies and the housing market from collapse. In addition, he signed the Affordable Care Act, a sweeping expansion of health insurance coverage for millions of Americans. Obama also signed the Dodd-Frank financial reform bill, which established the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and imposed new regulations on banks and other financial institutions. On foreign policy, Obama authorized the withdrawal of nearly all American troops from Iraq while deploying 30,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan.
At the end of his two terms, President Obama left office with an approval rating near 60%. He was succeeded by President Donald Trump in 2017.
