On September 11, 2001, a sinister and unprecedented attack occurred on the United States. Four planes hijacked by members of al-Qaeda, an international terrorist organization, crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania, killing nearly 3,000 people. To this day, people still ask: Who was responsible for the 9/11 attacks?
The 9/11 attacks were the result of a long-term operation led by al-Qaeda’s leader, Osama bin Laden. Bin Laden was born in 1957 and quickly became a leader in the global Islamic struggle. In 1988, he established al-Qaeda and served as its leader, orchestrating several terrorist attacks such as the bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa and the 2000 attack on the U.S.S. Cole. But the 9/11 attacks were al-Qaeda’s most destructive and largest terrorist attack.
In 2001, al-Qaeda amassed an unprecedented attack on the United States, consisting of 19 terrorists and four planes. The four planes—American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175, American Airlines Flight 77, and United Airlines Flight 93—were hijacked by the terrorists and flown into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania, killing nearly 3,000 people and causing the greatest destruction on American soil since the Civil War.
Bin Laden and his top lieutenants were directly responsible for the plan, financing, and ordering of the attacks. Thus, the U.S. government held bin Laden directly responsible and urged the international community to join the United States in bringing bin Laden and his al Qaeda network to justice. In October of 2001, the U.S. government launched its War on Terror, invading Afghanistan where bin Laden was believed to be hiding and ultimately leading to the eventual demise of bin Laden.
In conclusion, Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda were responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. Bin Laden masterminded and ordered his underlings to carry out the attack, which resulted in nearly 3,000 lives being lost. The U.S. government responded by launching the War on Terror, which ultimately resulted in the capture and death of bin Laden and the dismantling of al-Qaeda.
