If you thought being a thief was an easy job, think again. In 2007, an unknown suspect in Denver, Colorado dubbed the "Ass Crack Bandit" by police, set out to steal from innocent citizens. What made this bandit so unique was the method of entry they chose—using the butt crack to steal items.
On October 10th, 2007, a man was arrested in Denver after police determined he was the notorious Ass Crack Bandit. He was also responsible for a slew of other crimes. His name—Samy Bryant.
Bryant, a 29-year-old documented gang-member from a suburb of Denver, was accused of using a gun to commit his rash of ass-crack robberies. According to the Denver Police Department, he would typically enter an unlocked vehicle and use the butt-crack-theft technique to take items from a victim’s vehicle. He is believed to have targeted at least five vehicles in the Denver area over the year prior to his arrest.
At the time, police believed Bryant was likely targeting specifically individuals who owned expensive automobiles with leather interiors. His motivation to target leather interiors was that many models have open areas prone to easy access to a variety of items inside the car.
After three years in prison, Samy Bryant was released with limited options. Since his criminal record history disqualified him from many job opportunities and government aid, he has resorted to selling furniture and home decor items online in order to make ends meet.
While it may seem like a rather strange way to break into a car and steal items, unfortunately, it’s a tactic that was relatively successful for the Ass Crack Bandit before his arrest. And it appears that it’s a strategy that isn’t going away anytime soon, as more and more bandits employ this tactic to target unsuspecting people.
