The first Hollywood actress to be featured on a U.S. postage stamp was none other than the legendary screen icon, Marilyn Monroe. The stamp was issued in 1995 by the United States Postal Service, nearly thirty years after her death.
Monroe, who rocketed to fame after being featured in films such as All About Eve and Some Like It Hot, may never have become a global superstar had she not been immortalized on a stamp. Monroe beat out fellow actress Elizabeth Taylor, who was also under consideration for the honor.
The stamp, part of the USPS’s 20th-Century Film Star series, featured an image of Monroe taken from the photograph of her iconic “Life” magazine cover from 1955. It quickly became a bestseller, with an estimated 250 million stamps printed.
It wasn’t the first time a movie star had been featured on a U.S. stamp. Actor Robert Mitchum had appeared in 1988, and comedic actress Lily Tomlin followed in 1995. However, it was the appearance of Monroe that ignited a revival in the popularity of the U.S. stamp program.
Monroe’s legacy continues to live on, and her presence on a U.S. postage stamp is a fitting tribute to her star power.
