The first James Bond film was released in 1962. However, the character of James Bond had been created long before his first cinematic appearance. The international superspy was created in 1953 by British author and intelligence officer, Ian Fleming.
Fleming’s concept of Bond was inspired by a number of his wartime colleagues and acquaintances, combined with his own imagination. The character was then brought to life through the actor Sean Connery, and with the release of Doctor No in 1962 the James Bond cinematic and pop culture phenomenon was born.
Connery quickly brought his own interpretation of Bond to the character and set the blueprint for the many iconic elements, from his Britisih suaveness to the famous ‘shaken not stirred’ martini and gadgets that become synonymous with the Bond persona.
During Connery’s six-movie tenure as Bond, the character was quickly established as one of the biggest icons of all-time, and he was the first Bond to win an academy award.
Sean Connery was followed by a number of high-profile stars such as; George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig, who have each taken on their own interpretation of the iconic Bond character over the many decades.
As of 2020, Craig’s tenure as Bond is the second longest of all time with five movies under his belt; Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, Spectre, and the forthcoming No Time To Die. However, the original Bond, Sean Connery still holds the record for his six movies; Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, and Diamonds Are Forever.
