DMX, otherwise known as Earl Simmons, was an American rapper, songwriter, and actor. He was an influential figure in hip-hop culture, having made an impact in the world through his music, as well as his charitable contributions.
One of the greatest female rappers in the world, Missy Elliott, described DMX as "a true lyricist and a hard-nosed street maven". DMX earned the respect of many artists, including the likes of Eminem, Jay-Z, P. Diddy, and Nas. His distinctive chart-topping singles, such as "X Gon’ Give It to Ya" and "Party Up (Up in Here)", opened the doors for many other hip-hop artists to reach an audience far outside of the group’s traditional genre.
His career began in New York City, where he was born, and was immediately noticed by the hip-hop world. His musical style was intense, angrily pleading lyrics over a frenzied rap backing track. It was fresh and new to a mainstream music industry, and soon his albums would be topping the Billboard charts, dominating the hip-hop scene.
His first album, It’s Dark and Hell is Hot, sold four million copies in the US alone, and it was followed by Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, which climbed to #1 on the Billboard 200. With classic tracks like "Ruff Ryders’ Anthem" and "What These Bitches Want" from his third release and single "Party Up (Up in Here)" from his fourth album, DMX firmly established himself as an enduring icon of the hip-hop scene.
Alexander Marrow, a publicist for DMX, said of his career: "DMX’s story was a triumphant one – from rags to riches, from prison to loving family life, Earl ‘DMX’ Simmons was an unforgettable symbol of resilience, faith and hard work."
DMX tragically lost his life in April 2021. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends, and by the hip-hop music community. Through his powerful rhymes and beats, he leave a mark that will be felt for generations. As Swizz Beatz said: "He will forever be in our hearts."
