Season 15 of America’s Got Talent came to an end on Wednesday night, and when the votes were tallied, it was vocalist and musician Brandon Leake who emerged as the champion.
Leake, 27, of Stockton, California, was announced as the winner by judge Simon Cowell in the two-hour finale show. His moving spoken word performance during the finals earned him the title, along with a $1 million prize.
Leake is the first spoken-word artist in the award-winning show’s 15-year-old history to win the top prize. His performance during the finals was an emotional tribute to his late sister, who passed away seven years ago. He spoke about the difficulties of overcoming grief and trauma.
Leake’s competition included new jack swing group Ndlovu Youth Choir from South Africa, singer Cristina Rae, break dancers Bene and Section Boyz, singer/songwriter Roberta Battaglia, comedians Bonebreak and Broke, contemporary dancer Alan Silva, and magician Brett Loudermilk.
Arsenio Hall served as the host of the season finale. The judges on the panel included Howie Mandel, Sofia Vergara, Heidi Klum and Cowell.
The Grand Prize for America’s Got Talent is $1 million and a headline show in Las Vegas. The runner up was Roberta Battaglia, an 11 year old singer with an incredible voice. In 2nd place was Ndlovu Youth Choir, an amazing group of 35 children from rural South Africa.
The winner of AGT Season 15 is Brandon Leake. A spoken word artist from Stockton, California, who won America’s heart with his emotional and moving performances. For his win he will receive a $1 million prize, as well as a headline show in Las Vegas.
