2018
In May 2018, a new American Idol was crowned. The 17th season of the reality singing competition had its home at ABC, after spending an impressive 15 seasons on Fox.
For the first time ever, three contestants were in the top three – Gabby Barrett, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, and Maddie Poppe. In the end, Poppe stood out as the winner and it’s no surprise why. The 20-year-old Iowa native won over the judges and audience with her unique understanding of music.
“Maddie is someone who takes risks,” judge Luke Bryan said of the singer. “And in a world full of pop star replicas, she stands out because she owes her success to her own talent and ideas.”
For her grand finale performance, Poppe sang two original songs — “Going, Going, Gone” and “Don’t Ever Let Your Children Grow Up,” co-written with finalist Caleb Lee Hutchinson. And in the end, she was crowned the season’s winner.
“I don’t even know what to say. I just want to thank everyone who has ever been a part of this journey and any part of my career, who has ever played my music before or seen me perform,” said Poppe after the win.
So congratulations to Maddie Poppe, the 2018 winner of American Idol!
