On Saturday, November 2, 2019, UFC Welterweight Champion Jorge Masvidal (35-13 MMA, 12-6 UFC) and former interim UFC Welterweight Champion Colby Covington (15-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) faced off in the co-main event at UFC 245 in Las Vegas, NV.
In a hotly contested bout, Masvidal used his boxing and Muay Thai skills to outclass Covington, ultimately claiming a 5th-round TKO victory. Masvidal came out of the gate strong, landing an early combination that stuns Covington and followed it up with a head kick that dropped Covington to the canvas.
Masvidal then maintained pressure for the remainder of the fight, landing a series of powerful punches and knees, mid- and long-range kicks, and an eye-popping tally of spinning kicks to earn the TKO.
The win was a huge one for Masvidal, who not only defended his newly acquired UFC welterweight title but also earned a much-needed clean and impressive victory in the Octagon. With this win, Masvidal is set to be the next big star in the UFC welterweight division, and is now the odds-on favorite to be the next challenge for the welterweight champion.
In defeat, Covington’s title aspirations have taken a huge hit. While the former interim welterweight champion is still one of the top contenders in the division, he’ll have to work his way back to title contention.
In the end, Masvidal’s TKO victory was a dominant one, and he is now in pole position to be the next challenger for the UFC welterweight crown.
