The highly anticipated fight between UFC Welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman and former welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley finally took place on Saturday, March 13th at UFC 259.
The fight, which many had predicted would be fairly even, turned out to be a one-sided affair in favor of Usman. The Nigerian-born champion did not lose ground and continually pile up points against Woodley.
Usman ended up dominating the fight in all five rounds, outstriking Woodley a combined total of 120-48, according to the stats provided by UFC. Showing his superiority only in the way the champion could, Usman landed a total of 58 significant strikes to Woodley’s 24.
The “Nigerian Nightmare” also took advantage on the ground, attempting 12 takedowns, successfully getting five of those, according to MMA Fighting stats. On the other side of that, Woodley was only successful in one of his eight takedown attempts.
In the end, all three judges gave Usman the win, with scores of 50-44, 50-44, and 50-45. After a dominant performance, Usman was able to retain his welterweight title for the second time in a row.
The fight between Usman and Woodley certainly lived up to its hype and provided one of the most dominating performances in recent UFC history. Usman’s next fight is yet to be determined, but this win only solidifies his position as one of the top contenders in the welterweight division.
