On December 1st, 2021, Luka Modric made history as he became the first player to win the prestigious Ballon D’or award for three times. The Croatian international was chosen ahead of rival contenders Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who had shared the award in each of the previous 10 years.
Modric, who has been a stalwart for Real Madrid since he joined the club in 2012, faced tough competition from the two of the world’s most decorated players, who have between them dominated the award since Kaka’s victory in 2007.
The 35-year old’s victory was seen as a victory for determination, with Modric showing his age-defying form throughout the 2020/21 season. The midfielder scored in Madrid’s 3-1 win over Liverpool in the Champions League quarterfinals, before playing a crucial role as they went on to lift the trophy a few weeks later.
Modric was also in fine form at the recent European Championships, helping Croatia reach the final, and it was this form that secured him the award. His three victories make him the joint fourth most successful recipient, alongside his mentor and former Ballon D’or winners Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo.
The Ballon D’or is one of the world’s most iconic awards and Modric will hope his latest triumph can grow his already rich legacy. With his next contract due to expire in 2022, the midfielder may yet prove he is still able to compete at the highest level.
Regardless of whether or not Modric can continue to show the same levels of skill and determination, his latest award will be seen as testament to a career that has always been defined by resilience.
