The 63rd Annual 2020/2021 Grammy Awards were held on March 14, 2021 and revealed what had been building up to be one of the most highly anticipated music awards shows in recent times. After many cancellations of all sorts of major events worldwide due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Grammy Awards were held this year in a socially-distanced ceremony at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
The highlights of the night belonged to the thought-provoking, outspoken and ever-powerful Taylor Swift who became the first woman to win Album of the Year three times, the most decorated female artist at the Grammys and she also gained her second Song of the Year award.
The New York based Black Pumas won Best New Artist, while Billie Eilish won Song of the Year as well as Record of the Year – both of which she previously won in 2020. BeyoncĂ©, who was nominated a historic nine times and went into the night with a possibility of tying the record, became the second most decorated female artist in Grammy history when she won four awards. She won Best R&B Performance, Best Music Video and Best Rap Song with her popular hits "Black Parade" and "Savage".
Other highlights included H.E.R winning Best R&B Album, Post Malone winning Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album, and Harry Styles taking home Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Watermelon Sugar".
Because it was a socially-distanced ceremony, the winners were unable to accept their awards on stage which was highly disappointing for both the nominees and the fans. However, their messages of gratitude for the win were inspiring and even more heartfelt in the words of Taylor Swift who wrote on Instagram after the win: "I want to thank you not just for this award, but for believing in me and for what you said and what you did to me".
Regardless of who won, the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards offered a brief look at what life is like outside the pandemic and gave people something to celebrate after a difficult year. While it was truly a night to remember, both fans and musicians alike are looking forward to returning to the usual format of the ceremony and celebrating music together in the future.
