The Heisman Trophy annually recognizes college football’s top individual performer and has become one of the most recognizable awards in all of sports. The 2020 Heisman Trophy was awarded to Alabama quarterback, Mac Jones.
Jones, a junior from Jacksonville, Florida, led the Crimson Tide to an undefeated regular season and a spot in the College Football Playoff. He had an impressive season, throwing for 4,032 yards and 36 touchdowns, with only four interceptions, while posting a passer rating of 203.1.
Jones was the third Alabama quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy in the last decade, with Mark Ingram (2009) and Derrick Henry (2015) claiming the honor previously. He was also the second Alabama player to win the Heisman in a three-year span, with wide receiver DeVonta Smith capturing the award in 2020.
Jones was the first SEC quarterback since Johnny Manziel (2012) to win the Heisman and the first non-Heisman finalist to win the award since Sam Bradford in 2008.
He was the third quarterback to win the award in the last four years, joining Lamar Jackson (2016) and Kyler Murray (2018).
When asked how it felt to win the Heisman Trophy, Jones said it was an “amazing honor.”
“It’s still all sinking in,” he said. “I’m just so thankful, so blessed to be in this position and so honored to be named the Heisman Trophy winner.”
Jones thanked his family, coaches, and teammates for all their support throughout his journey.
“Without them, none of this would have been possible,” Jones said. “This award is for them more than anyone else.”
