Stakes 2018
The 2018 Preakness Stakes race was run on May 19th, 2018, at the legendary Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. After a thrilling finish, Justify captured the first leg of the Triple Crown in a dramatic come-from-behind victory.
The Preakness Stakes has been run at Pimlico since 1873 and has been won by some of the greatest horses in racing history. Justify, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by jockey Mike Smith, was the favorite to win the race and delivered on that expectation.
After a slow start, Justify was able to make up ground in the backstretch and pass Bravazo to win by a half a length. Good Magic finished in second and Bravazo was third.
The victory was Justify’s sixth in a row and sets him up for a shot at the Triple Crown. He will face stiff competition in the Belmont Stakes on June 9th.
Justify will look to become the 13th horse to win the Triple Crown and first since American Pharoah pulled off the feat in 2015. He is only the second horse to win the Preakness Stakes without racing as a two-year-old and first since 1882.
The Triple Crown is one of the most grueling test of speed and stamina in sports and requires a horse to win three races at three different distances at three different tracks in just five weeks.
The Preakness Stakes, considered the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, took place on a sunny day in Baltimore in front of a crowd of over 130,000. Justify delivered on all the expectations placed on him and became the early favorite to win the Triple Crown.
