The 2020 race for two Senate seats in Georgia was historic, with a record-breaking 5 million voters casting ballots. After a close-fought contest, the two Democratic candidates – Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock – emerged victorious on Tuesday night, securing the Senate majority for their party.
The Democrats’ successful campaign was a result of the state’s changing demographics. Georgia’s population has been shifting from a majority white population to a growing number of African-American and Latinx citizens among others. The Democrats were able to leverage this changing demographic in their campaigns and supplement it with a well-funded ad blitz targeting voting blocs across the state.
Ossoff and Warnock were up against two incumbent Republican candidates: Senator Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue. The race was called for Ossoff and Warnock in the early morning hours of Wednesday morning.
Ossoff came out on top by 6.9% with a total of 50.6% of the vote. Warnock won with 32.9% of the votes.
This is a major blow for the Republican Party as the Democrats now have a majority in the Senate and can push forward their agenda without the need to compromise with Republicans. It is also a major victory and a proof of the importance of voter mobilization in key states, as the Democrats rallied to turn things around in Georgia.
