Hallelujah is one of the most popular and well-known songs in modern music, but many people do not know who wrote it. The person responsible for the incredible song is Leonard Cohen, a Canadian singer-songwriter who was a major influence in the 1960s and 70s.
The history of the song goes back to 1984 when Cohen wrote it as part of his album Various Positions. It was well-received but not a hit at the time. It wasn’t until it was covered by Jeff Buckley in 1994 that it started to become wildly popular and reach its current iconic status.
Although Buckley’s version of the song has become the definitive version, it has also been covered over 300 times by a range of famous artists like Rufus Wainwright, k.d. Lang and Bono.
Cohen wrote the song with spiritual themes in mind, though it was never intended to be a religious song. He based it on the biblical story of King David and Bathsheba, but the song is open to interpretation by those who listen to it and appeals to listeners of all types, religious or not.
Despite the trendiness of the song, its creator is often overlooked. Leonard Cohen will forever be known as the mastermind behind one of the most beloved and enduring songs of our time.
