I Will Always Love You was written and composed by Dolly Parton in 1973. Parton recorded two versions of the song, one as a country ballad and the other as a more uptempo pop song.
When Parton wrote "I Will Always Love You" it was inspired by her personal relationships. Parton’s then-husband, Carl Thomas Dean, had discouraged her when she decided to pursue a career in music. With her song, she was able to express her feelings of heartache, love and appreciation toward Dean. She wrote, "The song was written for him, and about him.”
The song was originally recorded for Parton’s 1974 album Jolene. In 1975, RCA re-released the song on her album The Best of Dolly Parton. However, it was its appearance in the 1992 hit film The Bodyguard, starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, that put the song at the top of the charts and made it an international hit. The song spawned a single for the film’s soundtrack, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks and the UK Singles Chart for 10 weeks. The single went on to become the best-selling single of all time, and won both Parton and Houston several Grammy Awards.
"I Will Always Love You" has been covered by dozens of other musicians, including Linda Ronstadt and Diana Ross, and has been included in various television show soundtracks. Parton’s version of the song still appears in various media and continues to be one of the most recognizable songs of her career.
