The Hunger Games trilogy was written by American author Suzanne Collins. Collins was born on August 10th, 1962, in Hartford, Connecticut and attended an all-girls high school in Birmingham, Alabama. She later attended Hamilton College and the school for writers at NYU.
Collins’s writing career started at a young age. She wrote for Nickelodeon and children’s shows, including Clarissa Explains It All and Little Bear. Her big break in adult writing came with The Hunger Games novel, which was published in 2008. The book quickly became a bestseller and sparked a movie franchise, with four films being released between 2012 and 2015.
The Hunger Games is set in a dystopian future where the people of Panem are divided into 12 districts ruled by the Capitol. Each year, two teenagers from each district are selected to participate in the Hunger Games, an event in which they must fight to the death until one victor is left standing. As the books progress, they graphically depict the cost of war and the struggle between government oppression and personal freedom.
The trilogy has been extremely well-received and there is a huge fanbase behind the books. It has won numerous awards and sold over 65 million copies worldwide. It has been translated into more than 50 languages and the movies have grossed over three billion dollars in the box office.
