In 1986, the British rock band Queen released the hit single, “Who Wants to Live Forever”, on their album “A Kind of Magic”. To this day, the song remains a fan favorite, with its inspiring and emotional lyrics that look at the theme of mortality. But what inspired lead singer Freddie Mercury and the band to compose such a timeless song?
The answer may lie in Mercury’s personal life. The artist had been struggling with HIV/AIDS since 1987, and was facing his own mortality. Mercury had always been a lyrical genius, and his philosophy was to express in lyrics and music what he felt strongly about. He saw life as a precious gift and felt that one should not take it for granted. This life philosophy can be seen as the underlying theme of the song.
The song itself is also influenced by the poem “Immortality”, written by Alfred Lord Tennyson. This poem asks the reader to contemplate the limitations of life and look beyond them, something that resonates with Mercury and the band as they write “Who Wants To Live Forever”.
Though there is no clear answer as to why Queen wrote the song, through examining their personal circumstances and the external influences, it’s easy to see why the song resonated with so many people. It has become a timeless anthem of hope, empathy and courage, and will likely be remembered for generations.
